How often do you pause to soak in positive emotions? It is interesting that positive emotions are often very subtle which is why, when we do feel them (which is more often than you may realise) it is a good idea to stand under a metaphorical shower and really soak them in. If not, they can pass through the brain like flour through a sieve.

This weeks video mediation will help you to do just that. Please share it with friends and families. 

As you may have guessed, as much as I love to write blogs and books, I also love to read, which is why I am including my book recommendations for August. I am also taking two weeks annual leave to recuperate and will return to your inbox on Monday 24th August. I find it hard to not be with you, dear reader, for two weeks as writing to you each week is an integral part of my life. However, I also know from a self-care perspective that I need to really switch off!

August Book Recommendations
The Choice - Edith Eger

As you may recall, I visited Auschwitz in January of this year and perhaps because of this, 'The Choice' spoke to me in a way that was incredibly profound both on a personal and a professional level. If I ever needed reassurance that I am making the best choices to help my clients heal and live in peace, this quote from the book summed it up for me,

"When we don't allow ourselves to grieve our losses, wounds and disappointments, we are doomed to keep reliving them. Freedom lives in learning to embrace what happened." 

Edith, who at sixteen years old experienced horror beyond our worst nightmares, is now a psychologist who, in her own words, is "92 years young." She reiterated what I know to be true - that trauma is totally subjective. We cannot and must not "compare our despair".  

The first part of this book is definitely not for the faint-hearted. Ultimately however, it will lift your heart now and for all the years of your precious life.
 
Siddharta - Herman Hesse

A beautifully written philosophical fable by German-Swiss writer, Hermann Hesse, this book recounts the tale of Siddharta, a young scholar in India. While everyone loves to be around him as he exudes enlightenment, Siddharta is not content in himself and so begins a life-long journey of self-discovery. 

Set in the time of the Buddha, Siddharta becomes a monk in the forest, later a rich merchant and finally a humble ferryman who listens to the river for inspiration.  

This book is synonymous with the rise of movements for universal love and peace in the 1960s and inspired many to eschew conventional choices and lifestyles. 

While there are a multitude of learnings one can take from this book, one that has and always will resonate with me is, 

"If your compassion does not include you then it is not complete." 
Podcast Recommendation
A Typical Irish Summer
This series is incredibly topical right now and is presented by my good friend and colleague, Taragh Loughrey Grant for RTE. It is aimed at helping young people make the most of this very atypical summer. While Covid-19 has been very hard on everyone, young people have especially suffered the loss of what they need most - social interaction.

An episode I recorded with Taragh will air on August 12th so if you get a chance to listen please do. I share my insights on how we can find magic in uncertainty, amongst other things.
