How to Cultivate Equanimity

I hope that you are well.  

I love writing to you each week and receiving feedback. It is always my intention to help you start each week with a positive and loving attitude towards yourself, others, our world and this week is no different! 

As uncertainty is the only certainty we have in our external worlds, it is essential we cultivate a sense of equanimity.  Defined by the Oxford Dictionary, equanimity is:

"a calm state of mind that means that you do not become angry or upset, especially in difficult situations."

For example, she accepted the prospect of her operation with equanimity.

The root of the word comes from the Latin aequanimitas, from aequus ‘equal’ + animus ‘mind’.

An 'equal mind' has the ability to remain balanced when receiving either good news or bad. Dr Rick Hanson, who I trained with years ago and who features in an exclusive interview in my forthcoming book, 'The Self-Love Habit', explains equanimity as "the ability to walk steadily on unsteady ground." To me, that really captures the essence of this crucial skill.
