Over the past three weeks I have had many positive encounters with charming Cretans; random strangers, waiters, people sitting at a table next to us, and others we have met as we plan our 2022 retreat. These encounters may seem transient yet they are incredibly important to our levels of happiness.

The term used in positive psychology to describe such micro-moments is 'positivity resonance' (Barbara Frederickson). This describes the connection we experience when we exchange a smile, a few words or a joke with a stranger. In these brief yet uplifting encounters we release oxytocin and serotonin, which boosts both our energy and immune systems.  

One such encounter we had recently was with a waiter/taverna owner (picture above) who must be about 75 yet has the energy of a man half his age, a sort of Zorba the Greek!  He runs up and down the narrow lane where he has roughly twelve tables to serve. The food is good but the real attraction is his positive energy - he sings to himself as he works, he laughs with the customers and even drinks a shot of raki with anyone who has the will or stomach for it!  I loved his energy so much that we went back and on the second occasion, he told us he was "a little stress" as it was busy and he was working hard to keep up.  What struck me was that if this was him "a little stress," laughing and singing then surely it was positive stress (eustress) he was feeling.

In the coming week, I encourage you to seek out micro-moments of positivity resonance. Wherever you are, take an extra couple of moments to stop and share a few moments of interaction. As in the Socrates quote above, while many people build walls around them don't let this prevent you from reaching out. Keep your interactions light and notice how you have the power to brighten someone else's day or even week. 

In this week's video I review an excellent book that I have just finished and recommend highly. It is entitled  'Human Kind, A Hopeful History' and is by Rutger Bregman, the Dutch popular historian and author.

I would love to share my love of Greece with you next year.  We are currently in the early stages of planning a five-star therapy/meditation/yoga retreat that will pamper your soul and lift your heart.
