About Barry
Barry Carlin is a CBT hypnotherapist and mental performance coach who works with men on mental health and performance issues. He runs a practice called Settle Your Head and combines psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioural approaches, and performance coaching to support psychological wellbeing.
His work centres on supporting men — fathers, partners, husbands, and sons — who may struggle with mental blocks, stress, anxiety, trauma, or poor coping skills. He draws on his own lived experience with mental illness and recovery, which informs his therapeutic approach and helps reduce stigma around men seeking support. He helps men change unhelpful thinking patterns, build emotional resilience, and improve performance in life and work. Beyond traditional therapy, he works on mental performance—enhancing clarity, calm, and mental skills that support daily functioning, relationships, and ambitions.
By sharing his own mental health journey and talking openly about psychological challenges, Carlin aims to make it easier for men to seek help and normalise conversations about emotional wellbeing. His work involves both individual therapy and collaboration with suicide-prevention charities and broader men’s mental health networks, offering support in clinical and community contexts. Central to his approach is the belief that “if you can change your mind, you can change your life”—focusing on mindset shifts to improve overall mental health outcomes.
Barry seeks to break down barriers that prevent men from seeking mental health support due to stigma, societal expectations, or internalised norms and to help men build practical psychological skills to navigate stress, emotional challenges, and performance pressures in both personal and professional life.
An interactive webinar on Men’s Mental Health hosted by Ciaran. N.B. This is for everyone!
“I believe people can live without mental suffering, without fear, and live life with peace of mind, purpose, and experience the world positively.”
Men experience many of the same mental-health conditions as anyone else, but some issues show up more often in men or can look different because of social expectations, stigma, and help-seeking patterns.
If you are a man, this is essential watching, if you are a woman then understanding how men experience mental-health will help you be better placed to cope with common situations that show up for the men in your life whether that be a partner, spouse, father, brother or son. Please also make sure the men in your life attend and watch/participate in the webinar.
Common mental-health conditions in men
-
Depression – may show more as irritability, anger, workaholism, or physical complaints (sleep, pain) rather than sadness
