Handling Life’s Everyday Challenges with Ease

What is ‘buoyancy’ in simple words?

The upward force exerted by a liquid on an object immersed in it is known as buoyancy. When you try to immerse an object in water, then you can feel an upward force exerted on the object, which increases as you push the object deeper into the water. Similarly with our emotional landscape, positive emotions and states rise to the top but only when we actively counteract the negativity bias that is hardwired into us.

The concept of “buoyancy” is an important complement to the widely popular notion of “resilience.” While resilience is often celebrated as a key strength for overcoming major adversity, it is not sufficient to address everyday challenges that most people face.

Resilience is the ability to “bounce back” from significant adversity, such as trauma or life-threatening challenges, and is linked to positive outcomes like good health and well-being. It has long been a focal point in educational and psychological theories, including Aristotle’s virtue ethics and positive psychology, where it is recognized as a crucial “performance virtue.”

However, “buoyancy” is a related but distinct skill necessary for overcoming everyday, minor adversities – those that are common but not catastrophic, like exam stress or failure in a workplace setting.

Both resilience and buoyancy should be recognized as both are essential for flourishing, but buoyancy is especially crucial for preventing smaller adversities from escalating into larger, more impactful issues.

In this one-hour interactive webinar, I’ll explore Jon’s perspectives on several topics, including:

🔹 The relationship between buoyancy and resilience

🔹 Is buoyancy essential for resilience?

🔹 How resilience and buoyancy contribute to flourishing

🔹 How can we increase or improve our buoyancy and resilience?
