The Positive Habit Weekly Blog – 5th March, 2018 – Slow Time

Dear Positive Habit people,

I hope you are all well and safe this Monday morning. A big thanks to all those who worked on the emergency response to the extreme weather and helped keep roads open and got people to hospital etc.

If you live in Ireland as many of my readers do and especially if you live in the East of the country you will be waking up to the first ‘normal’ day after the extreme weather of the past week with #thebeastfromtheeast and #stormemma which forced most of us into hibernation to escape from the elements. The media hype over this was almost relentless and for those of us prone to anxiety it felt like setting a foot outside the door could lead to imminent death!

SO…how did you respond?  Being cooped up at home for days on end, especially if you have kids, can be quite a challenge. When we are forced to ‘slow down’ by such events we are provided with a rare opportunity to learn about ourselves and how we respond to the situation.

Busyness creates the perfect hiding place, so what happens when we have no choice but to slow down?

Personally, part of me went straight into resistance mode on Wednesday morning when the snow started; what do you mean we have to cancel the meeting? Why can’t my clients travel to their appointments? How dare the school close? How inconvenient! Why is my husband home from work in the middle of the day?

Thankfully, when I accepted the situation things got brighter and it wasn’t just the reflection from the amazing snow! I seized the opportunity with both hands, grabbed a snowball and threw it at my son! It was even beginning to feel a lot like the Christmas holidays so we roasted a chicken and baked cakes. I found myself playing chess and started to make a dress with my mum and son, something I’ve wanted to do for ages. Many years ago, when I was a child, my mother made her own clothes so cutting the fabric and following the pattern made me appreciate the beauty of making something from scratch and the connection I have with my loved ones. Each time I wear the dress this summer I will be reminded of that special time, the snow of 2018!

Nature has taught us a lesson – that we need to implement more of this ‘slow time’ to help us to reconnect – no matter what the weather!

Have a lovely, snow-free week and please watch the latest in my video series The Positive Habit, Stress-Free, Anxiety-Free, Week Five – How to Release Anxiety With Compassion.

The feedback for the previous videos has been great and I am delighted that they are helping people to live more peacefully.

If you get a chance this morning at 10.30.am, tune into the Dermot & Dave Show on Today FM for Mind Yourself Now! I’ll be discussing social anxiety which affects almost 20% of Irish people.

The Positive Habit Weekly Blog – 26th February, 2018 – Feel Lighter, Feel Younger

Dear Positive Habit People,

I hope you are all well this Monday morning.

Did you know that there is evidence to suggest that dog owners live longer? In a study by Uppsala University (Sweden), researchers demonstrated that dog ownership is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease in single households and with a reduced risk of cardiovascular and all-cause death in the general population. One of the reasons for this is that each time we see our dogs we release oxytocin, the love hormone that helps combat stress and disease.

I have a lovely dog called Rosie and as you can see from the picture above she is a King Charles, a breed I fell in love with because of ‘Lady’ in ‘Lady and the Tramp’ and it became my childhood dream to one day own such a beauty. After many years we finally took the brave step and got our own ‘Lady’!  My mother always said that having a child is easier than having a dog and I have to admit that there are days that I agree with her!

Anyway, I digress, apart from helping me to live longer, Rosie also taught me an important lesson this week.  Having not been groomed for several months (in order to keep her coat for the winter) poor Rosie was literally dragging herself along and her coat was getting so knotted it was hard to see where she began and where the fur ended. The solution? A much-needed full shampoo and haircut. Rosie emerged from the ‘salon’ a different dog bounding out of the groomers like a puppy full of endless energy. Although she is only four, in dog years that is 28 and yet there she was behaving like an excited toddler!

Rosie’s renewed energy got me thinking about what we may need to shed from ourselves. Are you carrying something that could be dragging you down, causing you to feel tired and lethargic? Now, while I’m not suggesting that the answer lies in changing yourself physically, a new haircut can certainly put a pep in your step!

One of the reasons we love our pets (particularly dogs) so much and why they help us to live longer is their ability to be present.  We feel safe and non-judged when we are with them. The mind, when it drifts to the past or the future, often finds problems and brings them into the present moment, creating unhappiness.

The difference between us and Rosie is that she is naturally and always easily present in the moment, she doesn’t have to work at it, she doesn’t do yoga or meditation, she is just always here and now. The plight of being human is that we can choose how to use our consciousness, something Rosie doesn’t have to bother with. Eckhart Tolle, in ‘The Power of Now’, and in his other works attempts to create a ‘new consciousness’  where we are always fully present, something that would go a long way to solving the many problems of living through the mind.

Rosie has long forgotten her shaggy coat because she lives in the eternal present unlike we humans who find it difficult to let go of pain or problems from the past. Now, I may envy Rosie’s natural ability to always be present, but I am doing my best to let go of the past, to trust the future and to live in the now. I sincerely suggest that you do the same – I’ll be here to help you on every mindful step of the way.

Have a lovely week and please watch The Positive Habit, Stress-Free, Anxiety-Free, week four video below. This video is part of a series on acceptance being the first and most crucial step to letting go of unnecessary negativity in your life. The feedback for the previous videos has been great and I am delighted that they are helping people to live more peacefully.

The Positive Habit Weekly Blog – 12th February, 2018 – Follow Your Breath Not Your Thoughts

The Positive Habit Weekly Blog – 12th February, 2018 – Follow Your Breath Not Your Thoughts

Welcome to all the new subscribers this week. I’m so happy to see the blog grow each week as it offers me the opportunity to help more people.  I do hope that you will join my many loyal readers who report that reading The Positive Habit Blog every Monday morning helps to put them into a positive frame of mind and to focus on what really matters in their lives.

I’m currently handwriting this in a notebook as I am on the most amazing yoga retreat on the Head Of Kinsale.  It is a ‘digital detox’ weekend so I’m really enjoying the freedom of having no emails or social media!  The retreat is being run by the lovely, inspiring and very positive, Miriam Kerrins Hussey. If you don’t already know her work, I suggest that you take look here.  Miriam is a qualified Pharmacist, Integrated Wellness and Nutrition coach and, oh yeah, a yoga teacher! She has an incredibly holistic approach which is wonderful to see in today’s over medicated world.

Yoga is my medicine and for me, this is a little bit of heaven – to have an entire weekend dedicated to nothing but mindful movements. The stunning landscape stills the mind and brings a calmness that is so healing to my usual, busy city life.

If you are not crazy about yoga, you can still benefit from yoga’s most powerful tool, the breath.  The breath is a powerful vehicle for calming the body.

If you want to feel calmer, breathe deeper – so simple but true. A calm body calms the mind.

Many of us mistakenly try to use the mind to calm itself.  This is a little bit like asking a toddler to calm down! Using the mind to calm itself doesn’t work as the mind is a thinking factory and once we are in a world of thoughts we have lost the ability to calm and soothe ourselves.

So, this week if you feel like a little break from the busyness of your life without having to go on a retreat, take a step back, take some deep belly breaths and you will become just as zen as any yogi!

Please see below for the latest video from The Positive Habit – Anxiety Free – Stress Free in which I discuss the important point that ‘Anxiety is Not Your Fault.’ I hope you are enjoying the new videos each week and if so, please do share them with anyone you know who could benefit.  I’ve also included a link to the ‘Mind Yourself Now!’ item on Today FM with Dermot and Dave last Monday.

As always, I am also happy to get your feedback.

‘Mind Yourself Now – Emotional Eating?’ If you missed last week’s show, you can listen to the podcast here. I talk about the roots of emotional eating and how to avoid the pitfalls of seeking comfort in food.

The Positive Habit Weekly Blog – 5th February, 2018 – Feeling Emotions

The Positive Habit Weekly Blog – 5th February, 2018 – Feeling Emotions

Happy February! I think we can all agree it’s lovely to see the mornings getting brighter, earlier and earlier. If, like myself and countless others, you were on a ‘dry January,’ please make sure it’s not too ‘wet’ a February!

This week I want to focus on something that took me a while to figure out: the trials and tribulations of being an ’emotional’ person.  I now know that my ability to feel and express emotion is one of my strengths and is a key skill in helping others to feel better, to live more peacefully and ultimately to be a lot kinder to themselves. This is what enables me to establish a good rapport with the clients I see in my clinic and to help them to effect positive change.

The truth is, that all human beings are emotional and this applies equally to someone who wears their heart on their sleeve or someone who represses their emotions.

It is however, important to realise that feeling emotions does not mean that you have to be ruled by them.

While this sounds quite simple, it requires a constant conscious awareness to implement. Many of us may want to avoid painful emotions  or to feel more positive ones and this can cause an emotional detachment whereby we feel a little ‘numb’ or as if we are looking at life through a glass wall.  The ability to feel emotions and not to be ruled by them is ultimately a delicate balancing act that can be learned; giving yourself permission to feel sad, tired, upset, angry or irritable allows the emotion to move through you.  Feeling emotions however definitely does not mean you take it out on others through dramatic outbursts or by withdrawing into yourself and refusing to communicate. It does mean having the courage to sit with your emotion, to direct genuine kindness towards yourself and to let the emotions pass. Believe me, they always do!

Have a great emotional week! Speaking of which, I will be on The Dermot and Dave Show (Today FM) this morning at 10.30am discussing emotional eating. If you get a chance to tune in please do. I will also share the podcast on my social media and in the blog next week.

Please do your best to share  The Positive Habit blog with anyone you think could benefit. I am also always happy to get your feedback.

A Lust for Life – January 2018 – Contentment is the Springboard for Success

“When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive – to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love.” – Marcus Aurelius

What does it mean to be content? What does it truly mean to you? Like many words connected to emotions and feelings, these can be interpreted in different ways; semantics plays a significant role in how we feel about ourselves and this affects our relationships. There are an estimated 7.347 billion people in the world and we all see the world in different ways. Our perceptions of ideas like ‘contentment’ may differ greatly. So take a moment to think of what ‘contentment’ means to you…read more
