Positive Pause – 15th February 2016 – The Magic of Friends

the magic of friendsThis week, seek out the friends in your life who give you an emotional lift.  When we spend time with positive people we benefit from their positive energy.  Think of the friends you have and consider contacting one of them you have not seen in a long time or one who makes you smile or laugh.  Reach out to them and make a plan to see them the next time you have space in your diary.  Spending quality time with positive friends boosts endorphins in our systems. This is the magic of friends.

Positive energy that we get from people who are open, friendly and have a desire to enjoy themselves is a wonderful tonic for our mental health. By choosing to spend time with positive people, their energy rubs off on you and then you can spread the good feelings to other friends that you meet. The feeling of being connected to others is vital to a healthy and positive mind-set.

Positive Pause – 8th February 2016 – It is ok to feel less than 100%

feel less than 100%If you happen to be suffering from a cold, sore throat or upset stomach (as many of us are at this time of year) rather than feeling frustrated and upset that your life has come to a halt, take a moment to accept the physical feelings as a signal that your body is fighting whatever the virus/infection it may have and that it will soon pass. feel less than 100% Acceptance.

When we accept that we may feel less than 100% sometimes and cultivate a belief that our bodies are healing at the right pace for us, we heal quicker. Non-acceptance is resistance and the body has to work twice as hard to get better when we resist the situation. This can also be applied to any unwanted feelings such as tiredness. Breath into the tiredness and take a few moments to accept that you are tired now but know that this will soon pass with rest and acceptance.

Positive Pause – 1st February 2016 – Moments that Lift Your Soul

Moments that lift your soulOn Christmas Day, in a small village in the south of France the most glorious flock of birds swooped over the village rooftops and surrounding hills.  The immense swarm of birds covered the sky, sweeping above the church tower and tree tops of the village.  In a moment, one bird, perhaps the leader of the pack moved and then altogether the birds took over the skyline moving with grace like ballet dancers. Moments that lift your soul
The collective shapes they made ranged from dragons to snakes, each one more remarkable than the last.  My heart and soul were lifted to the same heights at which the birds flew.
This week, recall a similar moment in your life when nature had the power to transform your consciousness and lift it to wonderful heights.  These moments are above and beyond the realms of our everyday life and remind us of how truly wonderful it is to be alive and part of the universe. Rejoice!

Positive Pause – 25th January 2016 – Your Positive Choice

choiceWe all know the consequences of daily chores left unattended – it can seem overwhelming to have to face a backlog of dishes or laundry. We also know that by consistently taking a few moments each day to deal with these chores they become easily manageable.  Similarly with mental health, by taking a few moments each day to pause for positivity you are in fact making a decision to lead an open and mindful life.  It is essential to note here the use of the word “decision” because decision is, in effect, an action resulting from a choice and we all have to make choices on a daily basis.  The important thing is to make the right choices.

This week, choose to be positive, especially at moments when you feel overwhelmed.

Positive Pause – 18th January 2015 – Neuroplasticity: Your Flexible Brain

Neuroplasticiy - neural pathways

Imagine you lived in a world where from a young age you were taught to look after your mental well-being by using a  daily routine similar to the way  you  brush your teeth everyday.  This daily practice would ensure that your mind did not rot and cause you pain. Emotional pain is one of the most difficult for the human mind and body to endure. The unattended mind is, in essence, no different to your teeth. If ignored it has the potential to allow negativity to take over and to rot away the true essence of who you are. Neuroplasticity

When we are young children we lose our baby teeth but are given the opportunity to start again with a second set of teeth. Thanks to research in the last twelve to fifteen years we now know that our brains are also given second, third and countless chances to start again.  In essence, our neural synapses and pathways are malleable and flexible which means we are not stuck with our conditioning.  This is the concept of neuroplasticity. We can train our minds to be consistently positive and open and by doing so, can literally shape our brains with our thoughts which, as a result, will change the chemical composition in our brains creating dopamine and serotonin, both of which make us feel and relaxed and happy.

Our teeth grow back stronger and more resilient as adult teeth and when they are cared for they can last a lifetime and even shine brightly. Your mind can also work for you in this way if you care for it properly.

This week choose to focus on caring for your mind with daily positive affirmations that will literally change your brain.

Positive Pause – 11th January 2016 – Kabalah: Awaken Higher Self

Kabalah: Awaken Your Higher SelfThe Kabalah is an ancient spiritual paradigm that was predominately popular in the Jewish faith although it is has also been aligned to Christianity.  The Kabalah states that the human soul has three elements, the nefesh, ru’ach, and neshamah. The nefesh is found in all humans and enters the physical body at birth. It is the source of one’s physical and psychological nature. The next two parts of the soul are not implanted at birth but can be developed over time; their development depends on the actions and beliefs of the individual. They are said to only fully exist in people awakened spiritually.

This week, through the practice of mindfulness, find those moments when you feel that you are connected to your ‘higher-self’. This could be times when you are in nature or simply just happy to be in the moment.  The more often we allow ourselves to experience ‘stillness’ in our minds, the closer we become to awakening spiritually and reaching the third and highest part of our souls.  Kabalah: awaken higher self.
